Sussex-MTB News

We are a group of mountainbikers who ride on the South Downs. We have lots of rides going on each week as individual members tend to organise stuff local to them. But also we have our 'main' rides which consist of a Tuesday evening ride, whatever the time of year, whatever the weather! Nightriding is definitely a guilty pleasure of ours and with the advent of modern off road lighting systems we are able to go out and ride as far and as fast as we do on those warm summer's evenings.

The weekend usually sees a ride on a Sunday morning, either local to us in Sussex or up on the North Downs, taking in Pitch Hill or Leith Hill areas.

We do have regular rides planned off further afield. Trips to the Afan Valley or up to Snowdonia. The Quantocks, Purbeck, the Isle of Wight, Spain, the list is endless really, 'just get out and ride' as they say.

When we're not doing that lot then we can occasionally be found doing XC races or more recently doing endurance events such as Mountain Mayhem, Sleepless in the saddle and Dusk till Dawn.

One thing is for certain though, we like having fun on our bikes :-) So why not sign up to the site, check out the 'arrange a ride' forum and join us for a spin?

You can have a look at us (if you dare) on the 'about us' page here.

The site contains loads of articles, photos and downloads that you can check out too. We welcome (in fact, actively encourage) any reviews, stories, articles, photos, or anything else you'd like to submit!

Apparently there have been a few issues for people signing up, I realise this but it seems to be largely out of my control. Some people's ISP's treat the sign up e mail as junk and bounce it or delete it. If you're having trouble signing up e mail me here with the user name you want and the password and your e mail address and I'll add it for you.

 Multi moves on.....

MTB related stories and articles.

Well he said he'd probably be going back soon and I'm sad to say Multi will be off back to his homeland of Canada very soon.

Multi showing his manly credentials!

He's ridden with us on and off for a few years now and I think everyone who has come into contact with him will agree on two things: 1) He loves riding his bike, and 2) He's a character!

Multi's love for biking is infectious and he likes to go for it, even if it means a stack, a bit like his driving actually from what I recall from the lift I had back to the accommodation with him in Wales!!

Multi zipping through the Afan lushness

So farewell dude, I hope it all goes well for you, and don't forget to buy a house big enough to fit us all in somewhere for that amazing Canadian trip we all want to make ;-)

 Server / Hosting Issues

Jim's blabberings..........

As you may have noticed the site disappeared for a few days. I've had a few server / hosting issues. Hopefully it should be OK now, but as I'm away all next week I'd appreciate it if you could bung me a text if it goes down or gets locked out.

It's time for a change anyway, so I'll be working on Sussex-MTB V3.0 behind the scenes and once I'm happy with it I'll swap it over. Who knows I may even update the 'About us' Page ;-)

Cheers,

Jimbo

 Bike testing bonanza!

Reports from recent rides we've done

Last weekend Quest had their annual demo day. I love these days for two reasons: 1) I get to ride my bike all day and chat to lots of new faces, as well as the familiar ones, & 2) I get to try lots of nice new bikes.

I'd decided this year I had a sort of mission, as far as my day to day riding goes I'm totally sorted, Between the Hei Hei and Stiffee all bases are covered. But next year the intention is to do the Mega Avalanche and for that I need something a little more impractical! It was time to try some suspension bikes and see what was on offer.

I don't want a true DH bike as I feel it would just get used too little, but something a bit more freeridey, although it would be a pig to ride uphill, could at least be used for jaunts up to Pitch Hill, Chicksands and the Esher Shore. So although not everything I tried fitted into that category there were a few surprises in store for me..........

Scott Gambler DH10
What I really wanted to try was the Gambler FR20, more in my price range, single crown forks, double chainring set up. But unfortunately they didn't have one :-( So the DH10 was the only option. It was a 'short' not a 'long' which is what I'd need and with triple clamp Fox 40's, a single chainring with guides up the front and a close ratio block it was never going to be an easy ride!

Gambler DH10

My god what a lump of metal! At around forty pounds this bike was never meant to go uphill and that fact soon became very apparent. Like I say I really want to try the freeride version and I soon wished I just hadn't bothered. This bike is so heavy and has so much travel there is just nothing steep enough round here to get it moving. In reality it was probably the slowest ride of the day for me, downhill as well as up. It's a shame, I've kind of crossed the Gambler off the list now, unless I get the chance to ride the FR and love it I can't see me getting one. If you live in the Alps or even Wales then great, but around here it's too much bike!!

Kona Kula 2-9
As an antidote to the Gambler I needed something light to help me regain my composure! As a lover of the Kona brand I decided (on Deadly's recommendation) to give the 2-9 a go. I guess you need to be a particular kind of rider for this bike. Aside from the fact it will suit a larger rider better, I think if you like tight, techy singletrack the sheer length and height of this will put you off a bit.

Kona Kula 2-9

Well the one place it really will excel is on the wide open tracks of the South Downs. It was a bit of a revelatory experience to be honest, once you get it rolling it's so stable it's really good fun. Out of all the bikes on offer I think I rode down the hill fastest on this one! However my love of tight singletrack and technical riding means this bike doesn't really suit me. But it was a good fun experience to see what all the buzz about 29'ers is about.

Marin Wolf Ridge
Well if the other's left me feeling slightly deflated this bike may as well have had "Jimbo's Bike" written on the side of it. I absolutely loved everything about it. As soon as I tweaked it to my usual set up and set off it was apparent that it would be a lot of fun :-)

Marin Wolf Ridge

It felt just like stepping onto my Cove Stiffee, but with a large slice of rear travel. I was immediately at home and with 140mm of travel at my disposal each end it didn't kick me to death like the Stiffee sometimes does.

I love this bike and although I will be trying it's 'big brother' the Quake I reckon it goes straight to the top of the pile for me and the style of riding I enjoy. It's just a shame it's such a naff colour! (Who says blokes don't care about this sort of thing!!)

Turner RFX
OK, so I actually rode this bike a whole week later, but I did get to spend the whole day on it so it got a really good try out. Unfortunately it was a little too big for me, I could have done with a medium really, and at times did feel a bit like I was a passenger perched on the top.

Turner RFX

This was fun to ride, nice relaxed angles and quite light for what it was too. After the pull up the first hill I got warmed up and noticed the weight a bit less and got on with enjoying the ride. While the size didn't exactly help I was more un nerved by the tendency of the rear suspension to extend on braking, especially on the steeper descents and technical bits. It was a little scary at times, especially as the tendency is to go a bit faster than you normally would on a bike like that.

Conclusions?
Well for what it's worth I'm sure my opinion means absolutely jack to most of you, but I was looking for a freeridey type bike that will get me to the end of the Mega Avalanche and still be well mannered enough to ride round these parts and indulge in some mild 'huckage'.

The Gambler was just too much bike, OK on a really steep rocky downhill (in reality probably excellent for the Mega Avalanche) but too much for riding around these parts. The Kula was a diversion while I recovered really, if you want a bike for bashing out the miles and not get into really technical situations with I suggest you give one a try, it was really good fun. The Turner was OK, but the braking behavior scared me a bit and the fact I could get the whole Marin for not a whole lot more than a Turner frame knocks that out the running.

For me the hands down winner was the Marin, I *loved* it!! Next on the list then is the Marin Quake, see if it is as well behaved as the Wolf Ridge, if so I reckon that'll be the one! But also I need to give a Kona Stinky a go as well. Though as it's a similar design to the Turner I'm not sure how that will feel.

Watch this space..................

Over confident rider finds, and then goes past, his limit!

Reports from recent rides we've donemortgageboy writes "It all started so well on Tuesday afternoon. We assembled at a mate’s (Steve) place in Pulborough and finished setting his bike up with the help of another of our mates (Tim) who had come down from Cambridge to ride with us for a few days. With all 3 of us ready to roll by 5pm we decided that we would nip up to Fittleworth Common for a quick spin before retiring to the pub for a few swift ales ahead our days riding at Pitch & Holmbury on Wednesday.

Si, pictured on the right side of his limit!

We arrived at the car park and got set for the off with the normal banter and micky taking that is so familiar to any rider who is excited by the anticipation of riding with a group of good friends.

We made the first short climb which took us to the main view point of the common and I quickly spotted a short singletrack decent which we headed down at speed. This track spat us out into a small clearing with a further decent off to our left which ended in an open piece of heathland, sweet I thought and proceeded to nail it. As I got to the bottom of the decent I noticed a foot high kicker in the trail ahead of me which I hadn’t seen from the top of the hill, this should be easy I thought and proceeded to scrub some speed off as I didn't want to hit it too quickly and get too much air,, big mistake! As I hit the up ramp I noticed that the earth which had been used to build the kicker had been taken from the other side of the landing ramp leaving a rather large hole about 4ft round and 2 ft deep, b****r this isn't good I remember thinking. Next thing I know I’m over the bars and heading earthwards as the front wheel had landed in the hole which was too deep for it to pop out of, crunch, shoulder first into the dirt.

First thing that hits you is adrenaline, stand up, pack off, helmet off before the pain kicks in. I knew what I had done as soon as it happened having done the same thing when I was 14 while playing rugby. Steve & Tim arrived on the scene and started to take charge as shock sets in so I wander off towards the cars; thankfully they were not that far away. Next stop A&E Worthing!

After an hours wait to be seen I’m taken through and an x-ray confirms what I already know, a broken collar bone but just to make sure it's been done properly I’ve broken it in 3 places rather than the normal 1, one of the worst brakes the doctor has seen for quite sometime apparently !!

After a restless night on the wards which included a fairly hefty amount of morphine I’m discharged the following lunchtime with the promise of a call in the next 3 weeks to confirm if I need surgery to pin it back together or not so at the moment its fingers crossed that it will heel on its own or I’m going to be off the bike for longer than the 2-3 months they are predicting at the moment.

Bang goes the spring riding I was looking forward to so much.

[Bad luck matey, get well soon - Jimbo]"

 It's been a loooooong time......

Jim's blabberings..........

We were just having a chat whilst out in the car this afternoon and we realised that we've been doing this thing called mountainbiking that we all love so much for 20 years this Easter Monday!

It's amazing really, I've been mountainbiking for more than half of my life now! I'm pleased to say though as time goes on I just want to ride more and more and do madder stuff!

So here's hoping I do get around to doing the Mega Avalanche next year............

Got any inspirational tales you want to share? Or how you got to where you are now with your riding? Send 'em in.........

Cheers,

Jimbo
